Sandusky, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie where sub-zero temperatures may occur in winter, seems an unlikely spot to grow fragile wine grapes. But thanks to the temperate effects of the Lake Erie, the region’s climate is perfect for this purpose. The cool spring breezes off of a cold lake delay bud break until all danger of frost is past and the water heated by the summer’s sun lengthens the growing season well into the fall which ensures proper ripening.
A tour of Firelands Winery gives you the opportunity to see first hand how wine is made. Your unique vantage point from their tour balcony gives you a clear view of the cellars, bottling room, champagne cellars and warehouse. You get to experience a real working winery and your tour includes tastings. Guests may taste several different wines or non-alcoholic juices with a knowledgeable and informative host.
In continuous operation since 1870, Mon Ami Winery has continued to produce wine much as it was done when it was first built. Many of the operations are still done by hand. Built as a co-op by the European immigrants who sought a market for their grape crop, Mon Ami Winery was constructed making use of native materials found in the area. The 4 to 6 feet thick walls are created from limestone blocks wrought out of the cellar excavations. The Mon Ami restaurant is famous for top quality foods, well prepared and served with Award Winning Mon Ami wines. Lunch and dinner are served daily.
